Chemicals and safety data sheets

What is a safety data sheet and what does it contain?

It is a document with sixteen fixed sections describing a chemical's hazards, its safe use and what to do in an emergency. The section order is the same worldwide; the real work is not filing the sheet but carrying its hazard statements into your own operations.

Sixteen sections

The order is: identification, hazard identification, composition, first aid, firefighting, accidental release, handling and storage, exposure controls and personal protection, physical and chemical properties, stability and reactivity, toxicology, ecology, disposal, transport, regulatory information, other information. The order is fixed; leaving a section blank does not mean "no information" — it must carry a reason.

Joining the sheet to the inventory

On its own the sheet is worth little. The value lies in tying its hazard statements (H codes) to the substance in the inventory, to the job where it is used, and to the protective equipment issued for that job. Once linked, three questions answer themselves: who works with this substance, what protection was issued, and does the workplace need air monitoring.

The chemical inventory also feeds explosion protection and major-accident scenarios; one list serves three separate obligations.

Manage this in Optifora

Optifora is not a single program but a compliance platform assembled from modules. The catalogue states which module is ready today and which is on the roadmap.
