The work decides the method
A matrix (likelihood × severity) is fast and covers wide ground; its weakness is that the band thresholds have to be defined by the organisation — there is no universal cut-off. A task analysis breaks one job into steps and is the most productive method for maintenance and field work. A guideword study looks for deviations in piping and continuous processes; it needs a team and time. A protection-layer analysis weakens a scenario numerically through its safeguards and answers "are there enough layers".
Selection criteria
Three questions are enough. Is the subject a workplace, a task or a process? Who will use the result — the field crew or engineering? Do you hold numerical data (failure rates, demand frequency) or only expert judgement? Without numbers a layer analysis struggles; if the field crew will use it, a matrix and a task analysis travel better.
