How is PPE decided when a task has more than one hazard?

The method has two steps. Each hazard is first assessed on its own and given the protection class that answers it — breakthrough time for a chemical, resistance class for cutting, attenuation for noise. Then those items are tested for working together. If one disturbs how another sits, the selection is made again; it is not left to be solved in the field.

Step 1 — separate the hazards

In real work hazards do not arrive one at a time: welding brings radiation, hot metal, fume and noise at once. The right method is not to collapse all of it into a “welder's kit” but to decide the protection each hazard needs on its own. That way none of them disappears into the shadow of another.

Step 2 — test them together

Items each chosen correctly can be wrong in combination:

  • an ear defender can disturb how the helmet sits,
  • a spectacle arm can break the seal of a half mask,
  • a welding shield and a respirator may not be wearable at the same time,
  • a thick chemical glove can destroy the grip a fine task needs, creating a new risk.

These conflicts are resolved at the selection table. Left to the field, they are always resolved the same way: something comes off.

Step 3 — where there is a conflict, go back up the hierarchy

If two required protectors cannot be worn together, the problem is not the PPE selection but the task. At that point the higher steps come back: separate the work, sequence it, enclose the source, do it remotely. Insisting where PPE cannot deliver is leaving protection to the goodwill of the worker.

What goes into the record

In the risk assessment, the protection chosen for each hazard is written on its own line, and the compatibility check is stated. An assessment with a single line saying “PPE to be provided” cannot be explained in an inspection or after an accident, because it does not say what was given against what.
