Exposure measurement decision
A module is planned that turns a measurement result into a decision instead of leaving it in a folder: who, where, when and for how long is written down in advance; the returning result lands on the same record and the decision taken stays inside it.
This page is written for the safety practitioner, occupational hygienist and occupational physician who commissions workplace measurement and wants the results kept in a ledger that spans years.
Scope of the module
- Measurement planWhich agent will be measured, in which department and on which task; which workers share the same exposure and who will represent the group. At what time of day and for how long the sampling will run is written into the plan.
- Result recordThe agent measured, the result value and its unit, sampling duration and method, the laboratory that took it, the report number and date are held in separate fields. The report document itself is attached to the record.
- Recording the comparisonThe limit value the result is compared against, which regulation it comes from and the reference period the comparison was reduced to sit in the record's own fields; the reader does not have to go to a separate table.
- From a single measurement to a decisionOne measurement of a group is not a decision. Seeing the group's measurements together, reading the spread and the highest value, and writing the decision together with its reasoning are part of the planned scope.
- Repeat measurement and calendarThe changes that trigger measurement (a new substance, a new line, a process or ventilation change) are written into the record; the calendar for the next measurement follows from it.
Measurement is a design job, not a date in the calendar
This section describes the question the module puts on record.
A sample taken from the wrong person, at the wrong hour or for the wrong duration produces a wrong result however good the laboratory is. So the decision begins before the measurement rather than after it: who, where, when, for how long.
Workers doing the same job under the same conditions are considered together, and the sample is taken from the person representing that group. If the membership of the group is not recorded, who the result binds also stays unclear.
The work does not end when the result arrives. The value is compared with the limit, the decision is written and its reasoning stays inside the record; when and why the next measurement will happen is read from the same place.
