What certificate must a forklift operator hold?

Operating is more than driving: vocational qualification, workplace authorisation and fitness are required together.

Three separate conditions

First, the vocational qualification certificate. Second, the workplace authorising that person in writing for that machine — the certificate is general, the authorisation specific. Third, fitness: sight, hearing and reflexes are assessed in the periodic examination.

Authorisation is machine-based

Being competent on one type does not mean being able to operate every forklift. When capacity, lift height, drive type or environment change, the authorisation is revisited.

What an inspection asks

Who operates it, with which certificate and under which authorisation. Without all three, the machine having passed inspection is not enough.
