How is a toolbox talk run?

A short reminder at the start of a shift, focused on that day's work; it does not replace periodic training, it completes it.

What it is not

A toolbox talk does not replace the periodic training the legislation requires. Its purpose is not to transfer knowledge but to recall the risk of the day's work before the work starts.

A good toolbox talk

It takes one subject and picks a risk that will genuinely be met on site that day. The person doing the job speaks and the specialist listens; a one-way lecture is not a toolbox talk. It leaves one question and one decision: what will we do differently today?

The record

Date, subject, attendees and any action raised are written down. The same subject recurring shift after shift shows the risk has not been closed, and it goes back to the risk assessment.
