The lifting task
Measure at the start of the lift, where the hands grasp the load.
Horizontal distance between the mid-point of the ankles and the point where the hands hold the load.
Waist height (75 cm) is the most favourable; both lower and higher reduce the limit.

Calculation -
The index is 1.0 or below. The task is within the design target for the great majority of workers; review it again if the measurements change.
The index is above 1.0. Back strain risk is raised for part of the workforce; fix the factor with the lowest coefficient in the table first.
The index is above 3.0. The task should not be left as it is: change the weight, the position or the frequency, or make the lift mechanical.
One of the measurements is outside the valid range of the method, and in that case the recommended limit is zero. The task should not be done by hand until it is brought back into range.

The calculation assumes two-handed lifting, a balanced stance, a non-slip floor and a comfortable temperature. One-handed lifting, seated or kneeling lifts, shovelling, pushing, pulling, carrying and hot environments are outside it. The result is not a medical assessment.
