Respiratory protection selection
A module is planned that ties the mask to a measurement rather than to a catalogue: the concentration measured in the workplace, the hazard ratio it produces against the limit value, the protection factor of the class chosen and the fit test done on the person are recorded as parts of one decision.
This page is written for the safety practitioner, occupational hygienist and site supervisor who wants respiratory protection choices recorded together with their reasoning.
Scope of the module
- Environment recordWhich agent, on which task, what concentration was measured, the oxygen status of the atmosphere and whether an immediately dangerous condition applies. The decision starts from these lines; the name of the mask is written last.
- The three numbers of the decisionThe hazard ratio obtained by dividing the measured concentration by the limit value, the protection factor assigned to the chosen class and the maximum use concentration found for that class are held in separate fields; which of them drove the decision stays inside the record.
- Equipment identityMask type, filter class, the standard it conforms to, manufacturing and expiry dates, serial number and issue record are kept. The same record works over a shared field with the personal protective equipment inventory.
- Fit testingThe protection factor rests on the assumption that the mask seals to the person's face. Recording when and by which method the fit test was done, and the conditions that affect the seal, is part of the planned scope.
- Use and replacement recordWhen the filter was fitted and replaced, cleaning and maintenance records, wear time and training records sit in the same ledger; the calendar for the next replacement follows from it.
Why the decision starts from the measurement, not the mask
This section describes the question the module puts on record.
Personal protective equipment is the last step of the order of controls. A mask chosen without first trying to eliminate the source, substitute something less hazardous and separate it by ventilation is the wrong decision even when it is the right mask.
Once the selection stage is reached the order is settled as well: the concentration in the workplace is measured and divided by the limit value to give the hazard ratio. The protection factor assigned to the class of the chosen mask must exceed that ratio, and the maximum use concentration found for that class must not be exceeded.
That filtering devices clean the air of the workplace rather than supplying air of their own is another boundary the record keeps explicit. Situations where oxygen is insufficient, or where it is not known which substance is present at what concentration, call for a separate decision.
