Thermal environment assessment
A module is planned that records six variables together instead of reading temperature on its own: air temperature, mean radiant temperature, humidity, air velocity, the person's work rate and the insulation of the clothing worn.
This page is written for the safety practitioner, production lead and facility manager who wants hot or cold working environments measured and recorded period by period.
Scope of the module
- Measurement identityThe place, date and time of the measurement, the shift it was taken in, the outdoor conditions and the party who took it stand at the head of the record. The instrument used and its calibration record are held as an inseparable part of the measurement.
- The six variablesAir temperature, mean radiant temperature, humidity, air velocity, the physical load the work demands and the insulation of the clothing are separate fields. A record that looks only at a thermometer does not describe the environment.
- Separating comfort from strainAn environment that is uncomfortable and one that strains the body are not the same item. The record keeps them apart; which of the two is being discussed stays explicit on every measurement line.
- Worker feedbackWhat the instrument reads and what the person working there reports are two separate items. Holding worker feedback beside the measurement line for the same place and time is planned.
- Control and repeat measurementControls such as insulation, ventilation, separation, work organisation and rest patterns are written into the record; a measurement taken at the same point after the control lands beside the earlier one.
Why temperature alone is not enough
This section describes the question the module puts on record.
The same air temperature produces one result in a humid, still room and quite another in a dry room with air movement. If a furnace stands beside the worker, radiation enters the picture; if the work is heavy, the heat the body itself produces is added on top.
Clothing is the sixth variable of this picture. A protective coverall or an impermeable apron turns the same environment into a different one by preventing sweating from doing its work.
So the record holds six variables together rather than a single number, and writes the conditions of the measurement beside them. Which control to take first is also chosen by looking at which of those six dominates.
