Ventilation assessment

A module is planned that records ventilation as a control rather than as a piece of plant: the point where the contaminant is released, the capture arrangement at that point, the measured air velocity and flow rate, and the maintenance history of the arrangement are held in a single record.

This page is written for the safety practitioner, maintenance lead and production manager who wants local capture arrangements and general ventilation put on record.

Scope of the module

  • Source identityWhere the contaminant is released: which machine, which operation, continuously or intermittently. The location of the source, the volume of the room, neighbouring workplaces and how many people breathe that air stand at the head of the record.
  • Capture arrangementHood type, its distance from the source and its position, duct route, filter and fan details are separate fields. The same fan gives a completely different result once the hood moves away from the source, so the record keeps the distance too.
  • Measured quantitiesThe measuring point and date, the instrument used with its calibration record, the air velocity read, the flow rate calculated and, where applicable, the pressure difference are recorded. The operating condition under which the measurement was taken (machine running, doors closed) is written down as well.
  • Separating general ventilation from local captureDiluting the air in a room and holding a contaminant where it is released are not the same control. The record keeps them apart; which of the two a place relies on is read from the record itself.
  • Maintenance and repeat measurementFilter changes, duct cleaning, fan maintenance and fault records attach to the record of the arrangement. A measurement taken at the same point after maintenance or a change lands beside the earlier one.

Why ventilation is a record item

This section describes the question the module puts on record.

The order of controls is settled: eliminate the hazard first, then substitute something less hazardous, then separate it by engineering means, and personal equipment last. Ventilation stands on the engineering step of that order and does its work not on the day it is installed but for as long as it runs.

So installation on its own is not evidence. The distance of a hood from the source, a blockage in the duct, an unchanged filter or a slowed fan turn the same plant into a measurably different one.

The state of ventilation affects not only the air breathed but hazardous area classification directly: the zone decision is taken by looking at where the release source is, how often it releases and what the ventilation does.

What this module does not cover

The page does not prepare a plant design and does not select ducts or fans; that is engineering design work. The record holds the identity, the measurement and the maintenance history of the installed arrangement.

No target air velocity, flow rate or air change rate is written on this page. The binding criterion lies in the regulation in force and in the design document, and enters the record together with that source.
