How is periodic health surveillance planned?

The interval follows the exposure of the work rather than the person's age, and the exposure also sets what the examination covers.

What sets the interval

The frequency follows the workplace's hazard class and the agents the worker is exposed to. Noise, dust, chemicals, vibration and shift work change both the interval and the tests to be done.

Content follows exposure

Giving everyone in a workplace the same examination is common but wrong. A worker on a noisy line and one in an office cannot have the same tests; the examination looks at the organ system the exposure affects.

The result must return to the work

If the examination produces a finding, the finding must return to the work: a change of role, rotation, additional protection or environmental measurement. A finding filed and forgotten reduces surveillance to record-keeping.
