Environmental management system

ISO 14001 — environmental management system

It asks the organisation to identify where its activities meet the environment, to know its obligations, and to improve against measurable objectives.

What it asks for

Two concepts sit at its centre: the environmental aspect (where an activity meets the environment — waste, emissions, discharge, resource use) and the impact (the result of that meeting). The organisation lists its aspects, separates the significant ones against defined criteria, and puts controls on those.

  • Register of environmental aspectsAspects of activities, products and services are determined and the significant ones separated by defined criteria.
  • Compliance obligationsLegal and voluntary obligations are listed, kept current, and compliance is evaluated periodically.
  • Objectives and programmesMeasurable objectives and the programme that reaches them are set for the significant aspects.
  • Operational controlControls are defined for waste, chemicals, emissions and resource use.
  • Emergency preparednessEnvironmental emergency scenarios are identified, drills are run and the outcome is recorded.
