How the number is derived
The number of first aiders is calculated from the workplace's hazard class and headcount. A fractional result rounds up: if the calculation gives two point six, three first aiders are required. The calculator on this site derives the number from the workplace's data and shows the working.
Distribution across shifts
Meeting the total is not enough; a first aider must be on site when an incident happens. If they are all on the day shift, there is no first aider at night. Distribution is planned by shift.
Certificates and refreshers
A first aider certificate has a term, and an expired one is refreshed. Someone counted with an expired certificate keeps the number right only on paper.
Supplies and access
Having first aiders requires having supplies. The location of the first aid cabinet is known, its contents complete and in date.
