What is chemical control banding?

It is a method that decides the required control approach from the substance's hazard statements, its volatility and the quantity used, without waiting for measurements. The output is not a number but one of four approaches: general ventilation, engineering control, containment, or specialist advice.

Three inputs, four outcomes

The inputs are simple: the substance's hazard band (derived from its hazard statements), its volatility or dustiness, and the quantity in use. These three intersect in a table and produce one of four control approaches. The method was designed for small workplaces that cannot commission laboratory measurements; its purpose is to stop decisions from stalling.

Its limits

Banding does not replace measurement. Carcinogens, mutagens and respiratory sensitisers, substances with very low limit values, and work in confined spaces all require measurement and specialist judgement. Banding tells you which direction to move in; it does not tell you that you are safe enough.
