Who are the members
The committee is made up of the person representing the workplace management, the safety specialist, the workplace physician, the human resources or personnel officer, a civil defence specialist where there is one, a foreman or chargehand, and the employee representative. Membership follows from the role, not from personal choice.
What it produces
The committee's output is decisions. Results of the risk assessment, accident and near-miss investigations, the training plan, emergency arrangements and findings from site inspections are discussed; each is tied to a decision with an owner and a date.
A committee that does not work
One that meets and signs minutes but produces no decisions produces paper. Whether decisions have closed should be the first item of the next agenda; if unclosed decisions pile up, the committee loses its credibility.
