Manual handling assessment
A module is planned that records a lifting task by its measurements rather than by its weight: the distance of the load from the body, the height of the hands, the vertical travel, trunk rotation, lifting frequency, duration of the work and grip quality are held in a single task record.
This page is written for the safety practitioner, ergonomics lead and production or logistics manager who wants manual handling work recorded task by task.
Scope of the module
- Task identityWhich job, in which department, with which equipment and in which part of the day. The record is attached to the work itself rather than to a person; if several workers do the same task, the record stays single.
- Measured variablesLoad weight, the horizontal distance between the midpoint of the ankles and the point where the hands grasp the load, hand height above the floor, the vertical distance the load travels, trunk rotation angle, lifts per minute, duration of the work and grip quality are held in separate fields.
- Recording the resultThe recommended weight limit and strain index produced by the lifting calculator that already runs free on this site are planned to be attached to the task record. Which factor cost the limit stays inside the record as well.
- Form setFilling in manual handling forms published by official authorities from inside the module is part of the planned scope: NIOSH lifting equation worksheets, HSE manual handling assessment charts and the lifting, holding and carrying form of the BAuA key indicator method.
- Repeat measurementWhen the task, the equipment or the layout changes, the new measurement does not replace the old one; it is written beside it. Before and after are read from the same record.
Why the limit is not a single number of kilograms
This section describes the question the module puts on record.
A safe load in manual handling cannot be given as a single figure. The same weight produces one level of strain when lifted close to the body at waist height, and a completely different one when the arms are extended, the trunk is twisted and the load is picked up off the floor.
So the calculation starts from a baseline value and every unfavourable condition lowers it step by step: horizontal distance, hand height, vertical travel, trunk rotation, lifting frequency and duration, and the quality of the grip. The result is a recommended limit specific to that task.
This is why the record keeps not only the result but the measurements that produced it. If you do not know which factor cost the limit, you do not know which correction will help.

What this module does not cover
The measurement assumes a two-handed lift with balanced footing, on non-slip ground and in favourable conditions. One-handed lifting, lifting while seated or kneeling, two-person lifting and transport by vehicle fall outside it.
Pushing and pulling is a separate subject and is planned as a separate module. Strain related to posture, repetition and duration belongs to posture assessment rather than to this page.
