Posture and repetitive work assessment

A module is planned that records four variables together instead of reducing a job to a single number: how far the joint deviates from neutral, how much force is required, how often it is repeated and how long it lasts.

This page is written for the safety practitioner, ergonomics lead and line supervisor who wants repetitive work and awkward postures recorded from field observation.

Scope of the module

  • Task and cycle identityThe name of the job, its department, the length of one cycle, how many cycles are run per shift, the break pattern and the equipment used stand at the head of the record.
  • The four variables recorded separatelyPosture, force, repetition and duration are separate fields, held per body region: neck, shoulder and arm, back, hand and wrist, hip and leg. None of them explains the job on its own; the record carries all four together.
  • Observation recordAssessment happens in the field. A photograph or video of the task, together with the camera angle and which cycle was filmed, is attached to the task record; angle readings are taken from that record.
  • The worker's own ratingWhat the observer sees and what the person doing the job feels are two separate items. The worker's own rating of exertion and the region where they feel it is held in its own field, beside the observation record.
  • Before and afterWhen a correction is made the task is measured again and the two measurements sit side by side under the same record. The direction of the change is read from the record itself, without writing a separate report.

Why the four variables go together

This section describes the question the module puts on record.

An awkward posture held briefly is one thing; the same posture held across a shift is another. A small force applied once a minute is one thing; the same force applied thirty times a minute is another.

So the measurement takes the four variables together: deviation of the joint from neutral, the force applied, the frequency of repetition and the duration of exposure. Just as weight alone does not explain ergonomic risk, posture alone does not either.

The methods used in the field also add up these four with different weightings: whole-body posture scores, scores focused on the upper limb, separate charts for repetitive tasks, and forms filled in jointly by the observer and the worker. The planned scope of the module is not to pick the method but to put the measurement itself on record.

What this module does not cover

This is not a diagnostic page. The record holds the measurement of the work and the worker's own statement; clinical assessment and health surveillance are a separate field.

The measurement of a lifting task belongs to manual handling assessment and pushing and pulling is planned as a separate module; this page stays on the axis of posture, force, repetition and duration.
