Management system standard

ISO 45001 — occupational health and safety management system

It prescribes no particular technical solution; it requires the organisation to understand its own context, determine risks, set objectives, measure and review.

What it asks for

The standard is not a list of procedures but a cycle: understand the context, involve workers, determine risks and opportunities, set objectives, operate the processes, measure, review at management level, improve. It leaves the "how" to the organisation, which is why the same standard fits a construction site and a software company alike.

  • Context and interested partiesThe organisation's activities, the expectations of interested parties and the legal framework are determined in writing.
  • Worker participationParticipation of workers and their representatives is established where decisions are made, and consultation is recorded.
  • Risk and opportunityHazard identification and risk assessment are continuous; opportunities are handled in the same process.
  • Objectives and planningMeasurable objectives are set with an owner and a date, and resources are allocated.
  • Performance measurementWhat is monitored, by which method and when, is defined in advance — both quantitative and qualitative.
  • Review and improvementManagement reviews at set intervals; non-conformities and incidents are tied to corrective action.

This page does not reproduce the text of the standard; it explains what it asks for. The decision to certify and the audit scope belong to the organisation.
